We know that this statement about moving mountains and uprooting trees by faith is not to be taken literally. The key to understanding the passages is the nature of faith, which is a gift from God. The power of faith reflects the omnipotent nature of the God who bestows faith on His own. The mustard seed is one of the tiniest seeds found in the Middle East, so the conclusion is that the amount of faith needed to do great things is very small indeed. Just as in the parable of the mustard seed (Matthew 13:31–32), Jesus uses rhetorical hyperbole to make the point that little is much when it comes from God. The mustard seed in the parable grows to be a huge tree, representing the tiny beginnings of Christianity when just a few disciples began to preach and teach the gospel. Eventually, the kingdom grew to huge proportions, encompassing the entire world and spreading over centuries.
So, too, does the tiniest bit of faith, when it is true faith from God, grow to immense proportions in the lives of believers and spreading out to influence all they come into contact with.
One has only to read histories of the great men of the faith, such as Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, to know that superhuman feats were performed by those whose faith was, at one time, only the size of a mustard seed.

Sometimes our faith is tested, it seems, to extremes measures. Measures in which our faith, trust, reliance, obedience to God, even our personhood is stretched in ways it either grow us or we crumble under its weight.
I don’t know what you are facing today. What your week or month has been like. I know for us, it has been just this very challenge. Our weeks, months, have been sincerely consumed with seeking God in much prayer, fasting, numberable tears, and acts of submission before the Almighty God (the best place possible). It has even cost us thousands of dollars because of walking by faith and not by sight. Our minds are trying to catch up with what we have seen, heard, life’s turn of events, and the incredible God-power of prayer.
I still cannot get over the power of prayer we have seen…it is like God made visible right before our eyes.
Honestly, I don’t get the whole picture. I don’t fully understand the turn of events or what God has done and is doing in my own heart and those around me, but I am extremely thankful God is working on me!
This I have seen, even when life’s trials ‘seem’ so hard, so dark, to long, when our flesh and spirit grow utterly exhausted, when silence is what you hear or perhaps that great whisper to a roar, whether your prayerful requests are answered or not, or you are simply besides yourself in turmoil in what to do —God never leaves us nor does He forsake us (Hebrews 13:5 & Deuteronomy 31:6). If we seek first the kingdom of God with a purest human heart possible —God will answer. He shows those who seek Him first (Matthew 6:33), but be warned:
- God does not follow our time table –we bow to His!
- God is not to be demanded of –He owes us nothing, but through His love, He choices to answers and guide. Be patient.
- God hasn’t forsaken us –let us not forsake Him! God is good in the valley as well as the mountaintop.
- God is in control –not you, it is just that simple.
This leads us to a decision we all must make daily —will I submit to God’s plan or not?
- May our unleashed faith, our eyes, our soul see the incalculable power of God!
- I have a mustard seed, and I am not afraid to use it!
