We were recently on vacation. On one of our “meal” stops we had used coupons at this particular fast food restaurant. Happy that we had saved some monies, we took are places and waited for our food. To our surprise, we ended up with two extra drinks, two extra fries, and two extra cheeseburgers.
We prayed for our food and began eating. And yes, we had a conversation on how this had happened. It was clearly my mistake for I did not read the one coupon correctly. We didn’t need the extra drinks, we certainly didn’t want to eat the extra fries, and the cheeseburgers were still up in the air on what we would do with them.
What were we to do?
This is what happened…
We saw. We saw a teen boy sitting on the other side of the building. We asked him if he wanted some fries. He said no.
We continued eating.
By this time more folks had entered the restaurant.
We now saw a couple. We took over the fries, explained to them how we have extra fries and asked them if they would like them. The man smiled, patted his belly happily, said a hearty thank you and they took the fries.
We continued our meal then began the process of cleaning up when this thought came to mind, “Tell them about Me.”
We had shared love with these folks, physically, but their souls were more important than two small fries.
To my shame, my first response was, “I don’t want to bother them again.” Then the Spirit said, “How did you bother them the first time? They were happy to get those fries.” ((Convicted!!!))
Our conversation with the couple wasn’t long, but God-seeds were sown, to God’s glory! They were left with a specific tract that explains the Gospel in detail and we pray that someday they will come to Christ.
Later, as we were back on the highway, my soul was going through more conviction.
- I was convicted of my first response to not go. I couldn’t believe that was my first response, but at the same time I could. I was reminded, once again, that my flesh is weak and without Him I can do nothing (Matthew 26:41; John 15:5-7).
- I was convicted that if I didn’t go (back) who would tell them about Christ? (Matthew 28:19-20)
You see, we can not rely on other believers to fulfill our God given command. It doesn’t work that way. We are each responsible and accountable to obey. If we all responded like my first response, how would the message of Jesus Christ be proclaimed? It wouldn’t. Because we would be resting or relying on others to do what we ourselves have been commanded to do. And the last time I checked, that’s called disobedience.
Those fries were a tool, even in my mistake God used fries to help us share Himself with a couple who we do not know but God does.
I am glad we obeyed!
