Our church has a women’s group called ‘Rooted’ taken from Colossians 2:6-7.
“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the LORD, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”
It is our desire to walk this earthly life Rooted in Christ because without Him we can do nothing — nothing of eternal value.

Below is an excerpt from that lesson.
Jesus asked Peter a question. “Do you love Me?”
Lovest thou me more than these?
- Not once.
- Not twice.
- But THREE times Jesus asked Peter DO. YOU. LOVE. ME?
Turn to John 21:15—17
- Jesus physically feed Peter (breakfast).
- Jesus asked Peter three times – “Do. You. Love. Me? – “Lovest thou me more than these?”
- We see Jesus was patient with Peter allowing him to respond.
- This allowed Peter to get to his heart matter.
- To be honest – with God and self.
- Jesus listened without interruption.
- Jesus wanted Peter to get it – Christ above everything.
- Jesus wanted Peter to own it – to make it his daily life.
- Jesus wanted Peter to live (do) it – to have Christ his root source; then fulfill.
- This allowed Peter to get to his heart matter.
…So, what is Phileo?
When Jesus talked about Phileo love it referred to a love as in a friendship, or deep personal affection for a close friend.
Agape love refers to a love that carried the meaning of intense, complete, devoted, sacrificial love or total commitment.
…the question begs to be answered: Do you love Christ?
Being obsessed with something or someone usually comes with a negative connotation.
What does it mean to be obsessed? To have the mind excessively preoccupied with a single emotion or topic.
- Our obsession(s) – whether right or wrong – dictate our lifestyle.
- Questioning this –
- Look at what you place value on [or in].
- Look at where you spend your time.
- Time doesn’t lie.
- Look how or what you spend your money
- The bank account doesn’t replenish itself.
- Listen to what you talk about – or don’t talk about.
- The ears that “hear” you – hear what you love.
- Questioning this –
A relationship with God simply cannot grow when idols of the heart are manufacturing: when money, sin, activities, favorite “things”, addictions, or commitments pile on top of God.
David Goetz writes, “Too much of the good life ends up being toxic, deforming us spiritually.” A lot of things are good by themselves, but all of it together keeps is from living healthy, fruitful lives for God.
- Be cautious: Do not assume you are good soil.
- Be cautious: Do not assume you love God.
